ISBN: 15918217X Grade: 9 You know what? I think a good word to describe Battle Royale is "intoxicating". Some of it is delicious, some digusting, some just downright insane, but once you have a little taste you must have more and more 'till you finish it all. More violence, death, gore, mental instability have rarely (if ever) been found in such powerful combination with heart, loyalty, hope, and friendship. When Noriko collapses (most likely from an infection in her wound), Shuuya takes off with her for the hospital even though he has no idea what to do for her. With memories and conscience getting to him, Shogo follows ... just in time to save both of them. Meanwhile, Takako wins one fight only to lose from a shot in the back, and Sugi arrives just in time for one last, touching conversation (with their history explained with memories). Shinji and Yutaka are still working on a plan, now with a secret weapon (also explained with memories).
There are a lot of flashbacks in this volume, but they are fascinating. They build the characters' personalities and explain things (big and little) that effect plot twists and events that take place in the present. The story is evolving, students are dying, and the game goes on. It is sadistically glorious. I've never read a more exciting manga! Battle Royale is explosive! The graphic content and high-intensity action mixed with a thrilling plot is completely edge-of-your-seat captivating.
The art blows my mind — with a sense of realism that is sometimes exaggerated for a powerful effect. The expressions on the characters' faces are perfectly done and express emotions in fine detail create the realism of this manga. It's all horrifically real, and I love it because it is so real. Battle Royale is disturbing, frightening (with the possibility of such a reality show), yet addictive. I have made up my mind that once I finish reading the manga I have got to see the live action movie.
This is one manga series that wont be for everyone due to it's graphic nature and the very idea it presents, but for those that have made it through the first three volumes, the fourth is a must read. With only half the student class still alive, things should get a lot more interesting...
