ISBN: 1-58664-931-0 Grade: 3 This is definitely not at the top of my "want to read ever again" list. I'm relatively picky when it comes to romance, and Duck Prince is not to my taste at all. It is the story of Reiichi (uber nerd) who is magically transformed (by an enchanted dog) into a bishonen. The outside has changed, but he's still the same, hopeless guy on the inside. And to make matters worse, the one girl who liked him as he was (and owns the dog), has a strange effect on him he instantly reverts back to uber nerd for as long as he's trying to do anything that would constitute "most than friends". It's incredibly frustrating to read (more like a bad mix of comedy and romance).
The cover art and a few eye candy shots on the inside are as good as it gets. The art in general works well for the story Ai Morinaga is trying to tell, but it's far from aesthetically pleasing. The bishies are recognizable as such, but it's more in comparison to everything else. The "nerds" and the dog are drawn to appear utterly revolting (in that, it is a success) ... too bad that's a good majority of the art.
I would not hand Duck Prince to anyone new to manga (or to anyone else for that matter). The story is at the very least annoying, the art is a turn-off, and the comedy is too woven into the story to be even mildly amusing on its own. It's possible, if you're a hardcore romance fanatic or have some infatuation with ugly duckling stories, that you'll enjoy this, but I wouldn't count on it.
