I remember when I watched the anime movie Please Save My Earth; it was enjoyable but nothing that I particularly wanted to watch again. Now that Viz is releasing the manga, I figured I'd try that since movie versions of manga tend to leave out a lot. In this first volume, it seems to be exactly like the anime. It's a fairly novel story idea, but I wont say too much on that so I don't spoil things for people completely unfamiliar with PSME.

Alice is a bit of an oddball. She talks to plants and seems to have the same ability with animals. She gets harassed by a neighboring boy, Rin, until he falls 15 stories while she's babysitting him, wakes up, and wants to marry her. On top of that, Alice has met two boys at her new school who appear gay to her at her first spotting them, but she soon finds out they share the same dreams from the viewpoints of their person in the dream (one of which is female). Alice is fascinated with their dream. Towards the end of this volume she has a dream herself ... with the same setting and people as they guys' dream. Is something unusual is tying them all together?

The art is nice enough ... not my favorite style by any means, but still nice. There's no super eye candy, but it's not that type of story. In fact, what it is is a story. It's not a repetative sequence of battles or transformations or flirtatious scenes; it's the story of a few individuals, their common dream, and the mystery behind it all that really hold them together. Issei is my favorite character thus far. In his dream he's a woman so he has a softer side. Alice isn't really appealing as a lead character — she's weak and cries and is always down on herself. Rin is an annoying brat, and he only gets worse (if that's possible) when he falls in love with Alice. And Jinpachi I have conflicting feelings about.

As the end of volume one alludes to, things start to get much more interesting. While it's not terribly gripping it's a worthwhile read.
