Credits Artist/Band: The Pillows, Shuntaro Okino, Yoko Takahashi, Masumi Okui, P-chicks, Masumi Harada, Loren & Mash, Maaya Sakamoto, JUNO REACTOR, and Indigo Grade: 8 The Geneon CD Sampler 2004 is an excellent sampling of music from the anime soundtracks that Geneon/Pioneer distribute. The variety ensures there's something I'll enjoy, but the variety also works well together as a CD you can listen to in one sitting.
Ride on Shooting Star by The Pillows is the ending theme for FLCL and one of my favorite songs on here. I love that anime, and this song portrays the energy of it and stays in theme with it as well. Cloud Age Symphony by Shuntaro Okino is the opening song frlom Last Exile TV series. I like the use of bagpipes with the techno-y sound. The voice is a bit mellow and the music upbeat, and it creates a very versatile piece. I hear you everywhere is from the Chobits Character Song Colleciton. It is a very beautiful song that is pleasant to listen to (and it has a beat that helps keep it with the same energy level of the other songs).
A Cruel Angel's Thesis performed by Yoko Takahashi is the opening song of Neon Genesis Evangelion, and is a song that almost every anime fan knows by heart. It's followed by another favorite of many otaku, A Round Dance - Revolution performed by Masami Okui, the opening song to Revolutionary Girl Utena TV series. Both of these are from popular anime and are songs that are energetic with good musical scores and vocals. Jump - Hug me as tight as you can by the P-chicks, is the opening song for Hand Maid May. While I don't like the anime at all, this song is a lot of fun to listen to (and very short). Over the Darkness performed by Masumi Harada is the ending song for Gunparade March. I've only read the first manga so I don't know how it fits with the anime. It's a nice song, but it does nothing for me and is too mellow for this compilation. THANATOS - If I Can't Be Yours performed by Loren & Mash is the movie theme song for The End of Evangelion. It's a soft jazz piece like so many of the Evangelion pieces.
Mameshiba is the end song for Arjuna TV series. I own this soundtrack and love it, and this song is performed by one of my favorite singers, Maaya Sakamoto. Her voice is heavenly, and the music sunshine-y pop. Guardian Angel performed by JUNO REACTOR is the opening for TEXHNOLYZE TV series (and my favorite song on that soundtrack which I also own). It has a darker techno flair — it would work well as dance music. At times, love is is the theme song for the Utena movie and is, like the other Utena piece on here, performed by Masami Okui. Her voice has a very nice, slightly unusual quality to it that fits perfectly with this song. This is one of my personal favorites on this compilation for it's lovely softness. Theme of R.O.D. is the opening to R.O.D. and sounds a bit James Bond-ish. It fits with the detective/adventure genre quite well with its repetative bass and guitar riffs with higher sounds above them and a great beat. I Do! is the last song on this compilation. It's performed by Indigo and is the ending theme for Ai Yori Aoshi. Both the song and the anime are too girly-shojo for my tastes, but this song fits well with the anime.
There are soundtracks reprented here that I own and love as well as some I've heard and don't like. There is something for everyone though. If you like jazz, or techno, or love songs, or high-energy anime opening/ending themes in general, then there's definitely a soundtrack that you will enjoy.
