ISBN: 1591823188 Grade: 9 After the tons and tons of flashbacks in volume 4, volume 5 of Battle Royale is back into the main plot. There are a couple flashbacks here, but they really provide some insight. For instance, it is really helpful to see that Sho is a drag queen (both for comic relief, and to understand why he's acting the way he is). Shinji and Yutaka have a new plan and are trying to implement it, but the closer they get, the more problems they seem to have ... lack of sleep causing many of them. They're stuggles make up a good half of this volume. Shuuya gives us a flashback to his childhood and the last moments with his mother which help us understand more about the kind of person he has become, and they want to find Hirono again to have her join them ... little do they know she has been killed.
With every subsequent volume, I am amazed anew at the brutality of this series. These are high school-age kids in a kill or be killed situation, and other than a handful, that is just what they are doing — being murdered or murdering in horrible ways. Masayuki Taguchi must be commended for such utterly realistic art. I am blown away by all the visuals! Kudos as well to Koushun Takami for the way the story is told. If any of the flashbacks, conversations, or other interactions were left out or put in a different order, this would not be the manga series it is.
Battle Royale is a near-epic consumation of every aspect of manga. It will shock and surprise you forcing you to turn your head in disgust only to whip it back to read more. Don't miss any of this ultra hot manga series!
