Credits Director: Woody Allen
Starring: Will Ferrell, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jonny Lee Miller, Radha Mitchell, Amanda Peet, Chloe Sevigny, and Wallace Shawn
Rating: PG-13 Grade: 5 Woody Allen movies are hit and miss for me, so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about one of his latest offerings, melinda and melinda. The story is both a comedy and a drama that tells the same woman's story from both genres. It's a strange mix of the elements from both styles. melinda and melinda has an all-star cast of actors portraying Allen's creations, but the story just seemed a little dry and slow in parts. I didn't find myself captivated by the characters or worrying about the problems facing Melinda. Maybe it was too busy or maybe there was just too much going on that it made it tough to follow along.
Whatever it was, I can only remember the main character's name and, when there's a large ensemble cast, that's kind of bad. Each of these people had their own stuff going on in the grand scheme of things, but it was tough to tell major players apart. Don't get me wrong, there were some laugh out loud moments and some heartfelt segments, but this wasn't something I'd watch again.
I think if the works of Woody Allen are ones that you enjoy, melinda and melinda will be on par with what you'd expect. If you're into the more introspective works, then check this film out. If you want a romantic comedy that you don't have to think a lot about, then give this a pass.
