A cautionary legend of the demonic vampiress Purgatori, in which a girl of ancient Egypt is warned that following her carnal desires will lead her to a bad end.

Okay, I should probably start by saying this was sent to me, unsolicited, as a pre-release promo from Chaos! and Devil's Due. This is not something I would normaly read, so my opinion may not be the best judge for those who do like this kind of comic.

It's not that the writing was bad from a technical angle, nor was the art bad (although it wasn't up to Richard's usual standards, in my book). But as a pagan, to me it felt like biblically-inspired morality was being thrown into a context that didn't suit it at all. Egyptians, from what I've read, were rather renowned for being pretty pro-women's lib (at least in comparison to other cultures of that day and age), so a story that features divine punishment for a woman acting out of lust is a story that leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. (Hell, the story even mentioned Bastet as a "goddess of carnality" — which I might point out isn't a particulary apt description — and suggested that she would find the actions of the protagonist shameful. A goddess of carnality who finds acting on lust shameful? Does anyone else find that notion counter-productive? It doesn't help that the entire point of the comic seems to be just a fan-boy's wet-dream: scantily-clad bad girls kissing other girls and killing people. But I'm bi, and I didn't find it particularly titillating. I'm not saying the comic shouldn't be done, mind, just that I didn't care for it. Oh, and I do think there should be a "for mature readers" label on the front, too (but perhaps there will be on the finished copy).

On the up-side, if you do decide to try it out and end up disliking it as much as I did, they do have a money-back gaurantee through August 2006. So by all means, don't take my admittedly biased word for it — you might end up missing something you'd like.
