ISBN: 1-59816-165-2 Grade: 8 Kiri would make a hot guy if she wasn't a girl. She wants to be the perfect princess for Tohya, the love of her life and her best friend. He is rather effiminant looking so they get teased about her bring a price and him a princess. Her mom owns a modeling agency, and to protect Tohya from the gay models she decides to become a male model too — while bemoaning that she's enough like a guy to do it. She's feeling more like a guy than a princess, and to make matters much more complicated there's another male model hitting on her! — and he doesn't care if Kiri is a boy or a girl!
Never Give Up takes gender-bending to a whole new level by mixing in a little modeling, a little bisexual and gay flirting, and some fairy tale innuendoes and themes. The cover features what I initially thought to be a rather hot bishounen and soon realized was our female star Kiri. She does pass for a really hot guy when modeling, but as the story progresses we begin to see how very princess-like she's becoming with the attention she's getting from her co-stars. I wasn't entirely sure I was going to like this title, but once Akira starts flirting with both the male alter-ego and the female Kiri, both Kiri and Tohya's characters gain more depth and I found myself wanting more and more. When I reached the end of this volume I was practically screaming for volume two! A very tense love traingle is forming with a very big secret in the middle of it all. I don't know which guy to root for — the love of her life or the really hot guy whois suave and doesn't care one way or the other what she is.
Never Give Up will definitely appeal to girl readers of all ages. We all have our tomboyish moments, our awkward stages, and our desire to sometimes be a princess. This is a shoujo love triange drama like you've never seen before.
