"No More Wire Hangers!"

I wasn't allowed to watch Mommie Dearest when it was originally in theaters, but I remember that line from commercials and would say it with vigor - never realizing what it meant or what its impact had to the film.

I'd seen a lot of Joan Crawford movies and never considered her a flawless beauty like some of the Hollywood stars, but thought she was quite an imposing figure on the screen. I didn't know much more about her, but was curious to see why so many people were talking about Mommie Dearest.

After watching this newest edition with all the bells and whistles, I know why Mommie Dearest was so controversial. Here you had a woman who adopted two children and seemed to be the perfect mother in the eyes of the world, yet she wasn't a benevolent soul, she was more (if we're to believe her daughter's book) of a tyrant who was obsessive compulsive about everything in her life. She wanted her world to be perfect and was horrible to those who couldn't achieve here vision of perfection. It's quite a scary thought to imagine. (Also I was wondering if Angelina Jolie is the same way with all her adoptions and attempts to save the world by taking in all these children.)

This really opens your eyes to the true family life of Hollywood stars - or at least makes you consider how what you're reading in the papers and seeing on the television might not be the whole story. We don't like to think about things as less than ideal. Thinking of the good is better than contemplating the bad. I'm sure this made a lot of other famous "children" consider their lives and share their stories as well.

If you've never seen Mommie Dearest, I think it's a movie that just about everyone should watch ... at least once.

Plus this version has dozens of bonus features that will make you appreciate the heart and soul placed into this movie by its actors, director, and others who worked to see it was produced. It's a memorable film and I feel for her adopted children.
