ISBN: 1-59816-312-4 Grade: 5 Rozen Maiden opens with a young boy, Jun Sakurada, completing a mail order form. The following morning a beautiful doll arrives in a box. Jun manages to wind the doll up and she comes to life. Her name is Shinku and she is the fifth doll of the Rozen Maiden, a legendary line of lifelike dolls. She declares Jun to be her manservant and demands he take an oath to protect her Rosa Mystica. When Jun is attacked by a toy bear, Shinku protects him, calling to life other dolls in Jun's possession. She battles another doll of the Rozen Maiden and takes Jun into another dimension called an N-field via a mirror in the closet of Jun's absent parents.
She is very beautiful, very firm and is extremely knowledgeable about the making of tea. Shinku has spunk but that wasn't quite enough to save this manga for me. I have little sympathy for Jun or for Jun's sister, Nori. Odd details get thrown in that furthers the plot, but doesn't make much sense otherwise. Some elements of whatever/whoever Shinku is don't quite hang together very well. I got the sense it was like trying to fit two very different pieces of a puzzle together without seeing the whole picture and it didn't grab me enough to want me to get additional volumes to see what the whole picture is.
Other than Shinku's spunk and the interesting bits on how to make tea, I wasn't that impressed with this manga.
