In this volume madness takes hold. The cafeteria worker Sekiya uses a gun to defend all the food from everyone so that he can be the only survivor. Students are injured and many of the adults are killed (mainly by one another). Then, Sho and some classmates are forced to venture into the wasteland where they run from a mad killer...

This volume really takes the story and runs. With the onset of madness and the escalating violence, the school becomes reminenscent of the situation in The Shining. Also, the Lord of the Flies parallel becomes even more evident as the adults all get killed off and a heirarchy begins to develop within the student body (at least the part we see). If you love a good horror story then The Drifting Classroom will satisfy for sure. It doesn't need gore to scare the pants off you, it does that the situation and the reactions of the characters. And, seeing it through the eyes of a sixth grader makes it both more surreal and more real at the same time — kids seem to have a way of seeing the world and adapting to it no matter what strange things happen. We wonder if they'll get home but also how and if they'll survive.
