Anton Gorodetsky is an "Other", one of many special human beings who possess supernatural powers. Anton appears to be a seer or a kind of empath. An ability that is useful in tracking vampires and their victims.
Others are divided into two groups, Light Others and Dark Others and Anton is a Light Other. In ancient times, the battle between Light and Dark came close to annihilating each other, so a truce was made. Each side keeps 'tabs' on each other to ensure that the truce holds. The Light Others are the Night Watch and patrol the night, while the Dark Others patrol as the Day Watch.
For a movie concerning a battle between "Light" and "Dark", the plot is fairly convoluted. Anton attempts to protect a young other from vampiric Dark Others and is also dealing with a young woman with a "Dark Vortex" around her that threatens to destroy Moscow.
The main character of Anton is interesting but not all that easy to connect to emotionally. The same is true for most of the characters. Not something surprising in a movie that is set in a place unfamiliar to most American audiences. The plot as it progresses is confusing, only becoming clearer towards the end, and the movie ends in something of a cliffhanger.
This is more action-oriented than just a movie delving into the deep thoughts about a battle between Light and Dark. The Matrix movies might be the closest analogy to the combination of thought and action.
This movie is quite unusual visually, a bit different from other movies I've seen, while there is a fair amount of blood, it wasn't too much for me to handle.
I would recommend this for someone looking for something a bit different that the usual sci-fi fare. If nothing else, the visuals are often captivating.
