Credits Writer: Joss Whedon Penciler: Michael Ryan Inker: Rick Ketcham Colorist: Christina Strain Letterer: VC's Kandy Gentile Cover Artist: Jo Chen Grade: 7 I have never read a Runaways comic before. I've vaguely heard of them and only became interested when I heard that Joss Whedon would be the writer for Runaways starting with issue #25.
The issue opens with the depiction of events in prior issues with a 'voiceover' given by two unnamed individuals. It is clear that one individual is giving a report about the Runaways to his superior.
We get a brief update on six Runaways: Nico Minoru, Chase Stein, Molly Hayes, Karolina Dean, Victor Mancha and Xavin the Skrull, and a dinosaur!
We are then transported immediatelty to a restaurant, where the six Runaways are nervously awaiting the arrival Mr. Fisk, aka the Kingpin. The Runaways are forced to seek his help, as they want to stay in New York, but avoid other superheros, such as the Avengers.
The Kingpin is naturally suspicious and not pleased to be dealing with children who may or may not have killed their parents. However, being the Kingpin, he offers a deal to the Runaways. Room and board in exchange for stealing an artifact from a well protected place. In their attempt at stealing, they run again into trouble.
For having almost no prior knowledge of the Runaways and the events of prior issues, this was a very good introduction to newbies. We get a good sense of who these characters are, the relationships with each other, and their problems.
I was pleased with seeing the familiar character of Kingpin, who I know mostly from the Spider-Man comics. I was also a bit suprised to see a familiar villain appear at the end of the comic. The story and artwork are very good. The only drawback to this is not having an established history with the characters. Its sort of like trying to join in a conversation with a group of interesting people who have been friends with each other for a while. It will be awhile before you become part of the 'gang' and become more comfortable with them.
