Credits Director: Joshua Michael Stern
Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Nick Nolte, Sir Ian Mckellen, William Hurt, Jessica Lange, Brittany Murphy and Alan Cummings
Rating: PG-13 Grade: 5 I usually love a good fantasy tale, especially if it features an all-star cast, but I don't think I ever really warmed to Neverwas. The story featured Gabriel, played brilliantly Sir Ian McKellen, who was on the brink of insanity. He hadn't spoken a word in years and was in an institution. When a new psychiatrist Zach Riley, played by Aaron Eckhart, joins the staff, Gabriel speaks a few cryptic words to him. It seems Riley's father crafted a whole fantasy world in the pages of the Neverwas novel and Gabriel believes himself to be a displaced resident of that land. Through the course of the movie, you start to wonder if Neverwas is real, and if this film's an adult kind of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe adventure.
But, although the story of Riley's father and his own struggle is mildly interesting, there just are too many slow, long parts to this film. Although it was only 108 minutes long, it felt as if I was watching this movie for hours and hours -- and not in one of those good ways, where you don't want anything to end. Don't get me wrong, McKellen and Eckhart were very believable in their roles. It just seemed as if the story progression had a few glitches in it.
I believe this was supposed to be one of those uplifting/feel-good type films where you felt "something" by the time it was over. It didn't hit me. All I felt was "relief" that it finally ended. I wish I would have liked Neverwas more, but it just didn't resonate with me.
