ISBN: 978-1-4215-1000-2 Grade: 7 In the last volume of Red River, a pregnant Yuri was thrown overboard in a storm and rescued by Rusafa. They both find themselves in Egyptian territory and when Yuri starts to suffer a miscarriage, Rusafa is forced to contact General Ramses in order to save her life.
In this volume, Yuri is still the prisoner of Ramses, who continually attempts to woo her. Ramses knows that Kail is seriously ill, in part because Kail believes Yuri dead. However, Ramses refuses to go after Yuri in this state because he wants to defeat Kail with honor. Ramses also realizes that there is a spy in Kail's retinue and shares this information with Yuri and Rusafa. He allows Rusafa to escape and return to Kail, not only to pass along the news Yuri is alive, but that Kail has a spy in his ranks.
If I talked more about Ramses and the spy more than about Yuri, it is because that plot was more interesting to me than what Yuri was going through. Yuri herself fends off Ramses advances, worries about Kail, and is forced several times to display her breasts. It was the display of breasts that annoyed me, although it was actually relevant in a minor plot element.
Still, gratuitous nudity aside, this was a good volume and the revelation at the end was nice, if not totally unsurprising.
