Nana 'Hachi' Komatsu and Nana Osaki are two very different young women who are best friends.

Nana Osaki is a singer in a band called Blast and Hatchi is sort of the band cheerleader. Hachi is involved with two different band members, Takumi and Nobu. When she discovers she is pregnant, she is thrown into a turmoil about how a baby will affect her and and the band. Soon word of the pregnancy hits everyone and they are all wondering how this will affect them.

This is my first time reading Nana and I had a difficult time figuring who was who and how they fitted into the big picture. Not exactly a surprising coming into a manga at issue eight instead of issue 1.

It is clear that the strongest thing about this manga is the complex characterizations and relationships between everyone in the manga. The characters are not simple and neither is the situation they are in.

While at times, Nana seems like a rock soap opera, there is a good deal of substance here.
