Cain is forced to face off against his father Alexis who has an evil fate planned for him and a beautiful girl, Mikala, with a power over spiders. He's a twisted individual who treats his children like whipping dogs and manipulates them into feeling dependent on him and his "love". When all seems lost after Riff's trickery, Jizabel of all people steps in to help Cain, but he has other plans for this brother of his ... We also get a glimpse into Jizabel's past to see what kind of man Alexis is and how Jizabel became so perverted with death.

Even though I missed volume six, it was easy to pick up the important plot change (of Riff going back to Alexis). I love Mikala's powers — hoards of spiders at her beck and call, and nasty poisons from their venom. The characters are so real in many ways, and you can't help but feel hatred for Alexis, betrayed by Riff, and a little sorry for Jizabel (but also wanting to slap some sense into him). It's hard to craft characters like that, but Kaori Yuki does it with ease. Her art is also stunning — as may be know to some from her work Angel Sanctuary. Lovely hair detail, powerful dark eyes, beautiful lines and body language, and an overall aesthetic that leaves you breathless. Godchild is a fantastic and different story that can't be denied.
