Marjane Satrapi drew upon her experiences as a young girl during tumultuous times in Iran in the graphic novel of the same name, the basis for this film.

I did not read that original autobiographical novel, but I had heard many raves about it and have seen sample pages of the work. The movie clearly makes the transition from page to screen perfectly and with the added dimension of moving pictures, the joy and tragedy of Marjane's life is made more powerful.

The voices were excellent, the expressive animation marvelous. You are drawn in immediately into the movie. You feel the horror of the oppression, death and violence. You also feel the warmth and the joy of Marjane's relationships with her family and friends, and feel the pain when many of them are captured and killed.

However, Marjane is portrayed as no saint, despite her inspiring bouts of rebellion against the tyranny of the government and individuals. When she is in a free country such as Austria, she experiences less than happy aspects of Western culture and suffers prejudice there as well.

I cannot recommend this movie highly enough.
