I got free tickets to see the Progressive Skating and Gymnastics Spectacular that was being held for one time only at the local arena in my home town.

I'm not a huge skating or gymnastics fan, but I appreciate the beauty and athleticism of both sports.

In the arena, they set up one end of the ice rink with a large floor exercise area, the middle was the open skating area and the other end was occupied by various gymnastics apparatus: balance beam, high bar, rings and parallel bars.

They would alternate the skating and the gymnastics and at the end had all three areas going at once. At certain times, the singer Raven would do songs accompanied by either the skating or gymnastics.

The skating was fine, but nothing I hadn't really seen before. One good thing about these kinds of events is that since this is not in a competitive setting, the skaters can be more free in their routines and their music.

The gymnastics was of more interest, at least to me. It's not usual to see it being used as entertainment, but entertaining it was. Particularly the men's gymnastics. What really awed me and the crowd were the group routines on the parallel bars and the high bar. The routines and costumes the men had brought a great deal of interest and sexiness to a sport that doesn't usually get either.

One particular section of the performance had a male gymnast dressed up in jeans and cowboy hat do a minor floor routine, then get lassoed by a female skating to the other side of the arena and then do a neat high bar routine.

Overall the performance was fantastic, and despite the minor errors that cropped up here and there, everyone appeared to have a great time watching the show.

Which will be first seen on TV on NBC on January 28 at 4 pm EST. Mark that date!
