They face off with the Master of Shadows - holding him back with fire. However, there is tragedy when Ilvanna tries to protect a shadow (a strange shadow that takes human form). The girl with the dragon is back and helps them find a way home, and closes the doorway behind them. The kids feel bad about leaving like that and worry the shadows might still get through. But for now they are home, and that's good enough for all but Max...

I really hope this trilogy gets turned into a longer series because there's really not enough resolution. There's a lovely cliffhanger with a "the end?" but were're left with a great evil still trying to get through (and it knows who Rebecca is), Rebecca's past is still shrouded in mystery with just enough flashback in a panel to make us curious, and Max longing to go back and fight (and escape his unfortunate reality). So other than my mild annoyance that the story has ended, I loved every minute. The visuals are so vivid. Everthing in the panel is framed well and given the right amount of space and time to provide the view we need to be sucked into the story. The story is a strong adventure that kids will love, and older readers will get wrapped up in this strange world and amazing characters as well. I did think it a bit strange to kill off one of the characters, but it seems tied to something important - something not delved into as of yet. I'm bursting with curiousity still about this world, and would easily read many more volumes. Don't let this masterpiece trilogy slip by you unnoticed. There is so much built in to characters and story that is underlying, so much depth, you will quickly be absorbed.
