ISBN: 978-1-4215-2425-2 Grade: 6 When I first picked up this manga and read the blurb on the back, I was expecting sort of a urban detective series with supernatural stuff thrown in. I was a bit taken aback when I started reading this particular volume. The number of creatures and characters is a bit overwhelming and the setting seems to be more of a nightmare world than the urban setting I was expecting.
The series focuses on something called Magic Law and Magic Law practitioners. The good practitioners go after other practitioners who break the Magic Law.
This particular volume is entirely taken up by one big supernatural battle. One front seeks to rescue a magic law judge, while another seeks to defeat evil practitioner Isabi, whose help is need to defeat an evil entity.
I had a hard time deciding whether I liked this volume or not. It is confusing in a lot of areas, and I always dislike trying to decipher what is happening in action panels, especially when you have such bizarre monsters. Nothing turns me off faster than not being able to understand what is going on in battle sequences.
I had a hard time grasping all the characters and their personalities, and some of them were more annoying than enjoyable. I did appreciate that they managed to convey strong relationships between the characters; that seems to be its strongest suit.
A title that wasn't what I expected, but I'm uncertain as to whether or not this is a good thing.
