ISBN: 978-1-4215-3135-9 Grade: 9 While I am not a huge fan of Naruto, I have seen a lot it. You can't swing a bookmark in a manga store without hitting a toy, book, magazine about Naruto. I have watched the anime version of Naruto on the Cartoon Network and I have rented the odd movie now and then. So I am fairly familiar with the characters and the premise, which is about Naruto, a ninja-in-training along with his various teachers and fellow students.
Naruto is something of incorrigable troublemaker, but he is exceptionally driven to be the best ninja ever. In this particular volume, Naruto is learning to master another ninja technique. His former friend Satsuke has gone rogue and is planning to attack the village that he and Naruto defended. Meanwhile, ninjas collectively called Pains attack the village as well, seeking Naruto.
I really enjoyed this volume, it kept me engrossed from beginning to end. Although there are multiple plot threads here, it wasn't too difficult to follow what was going on. The fights in the manga reminded me of the fights in the anime, intelligent and exciting.
The only thing I have trouble with is Satsuke's extreme need to seek revenge against his former village over his brother. There appear to be hints that there is more to this than basic rage.
Naruto is a bit older than I am used to seeing him in the anime, but he hasn't lost the qualities that have made him one of the most popular characters in anime/manga today.
