Credits Grade: 7 This is an anthology with two stories.Mary Arevalo has fallen through a gateway into a strange new world filled strange creatures and giant monsters. Fortunately for her, she has also found Tanakura, aka Richard Trent, a fellow exile who offers to lead her across this new world to relative safety .... Tommy Bowen is an apprentice combat sorcerer who is up to his eyeballs in trouble. On his very first mission he runs into a goblin. Except, it's not a goblin. It's a baby grendel. And where there's one baby grendel, there’s a whole nest of even more baby grendels, all very very mean and very very hungry .... Poor Mary. I feel for the self-centered spoiled brat, I really do. Lousy love affairs. Wealthy, controlling father. And now she’s stuck in the Land of the Fanged and the Furry. Okay, I'm not being entirely sarcastic. She's scared, separated from everything she has ever known. But she's tough, too. Tough enough to survive to survive in Tanakura's world, even while talking his ear off. I love the sequence in which the two new companions march across the wilderness; he is completely silent; she babbles on and on about absolutely nothing. And then they are treed by a wild carnivore and Mary orders him to kill it so they can be on their way and Tanakura tells her to stuff it. :) As for Tommy Bowen: next time, fella, look before you leap. That way you won't get thrown around, stomped on, beaten, and nearly eaten by a baby grendel. Still, for your first time out in the field, not half bad. :) Now, what are you gonna do about Mama Grendel and the rest of her brood? Recommended for anyone in search of good old fashioned adventure stories with strong characters. Written: April 21, 2002
