Translator: Grade: 6 Jil is a Guardian, a person who has special defensive capabilities through their use of a shield. He is also a climber, one of many who seek to conquer the 60 floors of the Tower of Druaga and defeat the final demon to obtain the Blue Crystal Rod, said to be able to grant one wish.
After being booted from his older brother's party, he manages to scrape up a group of his own, including mages and a woman with a multi-purpose staff. They battle various demons as well as the rival group headed by his brother.
There are several things that marred by enjoyment of this anime, which is based on a game of the same name. First of all, it can't decide whether to be serious or funny. There are some dark and action-packed episodes, but also simply ridiculous episodes as well. The pacing also is off, as they seem to dawdle through some levels, and rush through others. Also the character of Jil himself is fairly bland. The only remarkable characteristic is his absolute belief that he will make it to the top and defeat Druaga. Super-confident teen boys seem to be a dime a dozen in anime.
The supporting characters are quirky and we get some background on them, but they are only slightly more interesting than Jil himself.
However, this isn't a terrible anime by any means. It was still moderately enjoyable to me and the twists at the end were quite interesting. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy this and I'm not entirely sold on getting the second season.
A somewhat good anime, with players of the original Tower of Druaga probably getting more out of it.
