Credits Director: Nora Ephron
Starring: Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci
Rating: PG-13 Grade: 6 Julie & Julie follows two people, Julia Child and Julie Powell. Julia Child is a famous chef and the movie covers the time in her life when she moved to France and started learning French cooking. Julie Powell is a fledgling writer working a soul-sucking job who decides to blog about her efforts to make every recipe in Child's 'Master the Art of French Cooking' within one year.
Of the two stories, the one focusing on Julia Child is far more interesting. Meryl Streep really does bring Julia to life as a woman full of life and love with a great passion for learning and cooking. You see how much joy she gets from cooking, the quiet devotion and support of her husband and the trail-blazing she did as a chef.
The Julie part of the story isn't quite as fascinating. I thought Julie was too self-absorbed and whiny. She is very skilled in cooking and clearly worships Julia, but I get far less sense of joy from her about her life and food. Julia is a bon vivant, Julie seems more of a pill.
I did think they made a good effort to parallel Julie's journey with Julia's, although that just shows how very different the stories are and which one is the more intriguing one.
Rent this for Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci's performances, fast forward through Julie's parts if you can.
