ISBN: 1-4278-1596-5 Grade: 5 The World is a virtual online world/game where people play as a character dong quests, fighting, and interacting in many fun ways. Nanase has joined a new guild after falling in love with the leader. She wants to be like the strong woman fighter Alkaid, but she's timid, mousey, and replies heavily on others. Determined to do something to help Alkaid, she finds a quest she can do herself, but she still needs help. Will the World help her learn to be herself and be able to handle the real world with confidence, or will she be crushed by vicious rumors?
This seems like a one-shot, and I sure hope it is. It's my least favorite out of all the .hack// manga I've read. The main character, Nanase, is utterly pathetic, Alkaid is hot-headed. The only one with any sense of understanding and true compassion is the guild-leader. Without him the story would not be worth reading. As it stands though, it is a fairly good read for younger readers; it shows how everyone can do something and the importance of being yourself. Not everyone can be the superhero and that's ok. But Nanase is so overly weak tries so hard to be someone she's not it's not very appealing to empathize with her.
The artwork fits the overall look of the .hack// world, but again it seems oversimplified. There are just enough differences in the character designs to tell them apart. There are no interesting or different designs. Almost all the eyes look the same — big and blank. But it moves well, it's easy to see what's happening, and there are some details that keep it from being flat.
Overall, not a book I recommend as there are so many other stories you could pick from that are better with the same message. But it's not terrible, and .hack// fans may want to read it to complete the universe.
