Ra’Meghan Val’Norium, better known as Meg, is a shoot ‘em up bounty hunter, and the only thing that keeps this saucy elf from being picture perfect is an overly large nose. However, this nose, along with her western get-up, often gives her the appearance of a Native American, embodying both the Fantasy and Western of the story at the same time. And, as we know, every hero, or in this case heroine, must have a trusty side-kick; in the case of Meg, it happens to be level-headed, talking bear. In this volume, their bounty is Darien Voss, a low-down, train-robbin’, forgerin’ scoundrel who packs a mean dragon (of the fire-breathing variety). This book includes the first four issues of Far West along with alternate, unused covers, beautiful pin-ups, and an early, never-before-published story presenting Meg and her first bounty which is quite amusing.

I love the twist of Fantasy and Western; they seem to work together quite well, even though I don’t normally think of cowboys riding dragons into town for a brawl with a bunch of smelly ogres. And not only is it a new take on Fantasy (or a new take on the Western), but elves in general have a new look: their ears have not one, but two points. I love the two points; it’s very creative and definitely original, and it gives the characters more of an elfish look. As for Meg, she knows that she’s beautiful and untouchable, so she’s not afraid to flaunt what she’s got by wearing butt-less chaps in public with only a thong underneath, or the occasional loin-cloth.

After seeing the cover and flipping through a few pages, I knew this would be a comic I would like; little did I know, it would really be a comic that I love. Fantasy and Western are two of my favorite genres, but this new twist combining the two is just amazing — and man, what a dragon! I can’t wait to get my hands on some more Far West as Meg goes after bigger and badder bounty.
