Strange things are afoot in Bizenghast Volume 7. Not that that is anything too unusual for the volume’s standard cast of demons and spirits and humans, a feature which makes this graphic novel stand out. Dinah is given some supernatural armor this time to fight and this time it's against some foes that used to be her allies. Dinah isn't afraid to let her peers know her weaknesses and instead of letting her inexperience get in their way, they use it to push her towards becoming a better leader.

The art and story are pretty perfect together. Its constant well directed action and is easy to follow for the 13+ readers the book is rated for. Its characters reference things in our world, CDs, etc, make it intriguing to follow and wonder what the characters are really like when they aren’t fighting spirits. It’s also just plain nice to have something to relate to when reading a TOKYOPOP book. Most of the stories are way out there.

The downside to this volume is that it ends abruptly – which is a great cliffhanger – but it also leaves a lot of room in the book. There are a few cool character sketches by Alice LeGrow and some fun fan art, but after that, the publisher throws in something that seems really out of place. It has a preview of the Dreaming which is hard to get into because the title page for the preview has "preview" in really small letters and just throws you headfirst into the story.

All in all, Bizenghast Volume 7 is definitely nice to read. It's something that doesn’t go backwards and is fantasy. I like creatures with multiple legs, things that fly, and especially cats that come in different sizes. Meow!
