Translator: Grade: 9 This release is almost exactly the same as 1.01. Shinji arrives and he and Rei defeat Angels 4, 5 and 6. This release also includes about 2 additional minutes of dialogue and a few tweaked colors. There is also a second disc that is full of extras. Since it's the same as the previous release I'm giving it the same score. My opinion of this recreation is still excitement and joy.
The extras include a little video juxtaposing the storyboards with the new CG footage for some effects and trailers using new arrangements of "Fly Me to the Moon" and a J-Pop song called "Beautiful World." I'm not impressed by these extras at all, especially not enough to spend more for that second disc than the lone disc of 1.01. If you already bought 1.01 I wouldn't buy this one — unless those 2 little minutes mean a whole, whole lot to you (it's neat but doesn't affect the overall story). If you haven't bought 1.01 yet, you need to buy either this one or that one. One of the best things about this series being redone is the format change from episodes to movie. It's really easy to sit down and watch the whole DVD in one sitting, and it makes it easier to introduce new people to this amazing series.
