Twelve parties, each with a cell phone diary that tells the future, are competing in a deadly game. In this volume Yukiteru (First) and Yuno (Second) battle Marco and Ai (Seventh, together), couple against couple. Marco and Ai rely on their full-bloomed love to conquer the newly blooming relationship of Yuki and Yuno. However, Yuki and Yuno are evolving and adapting and learning; they change tactics and gain an advantage. To make things more complicated, Yuki's father gets involved, but he may not be the supportive role model he remembers or wants....

The story is actually more interesting than I expected, and the cell phone aspect certainly ties into today's dependence on them. It's a modern-day horror story, but it's also unrealistic. It's hard to identify with any of the characters either. Yuki is very reminiscent of Shinji from Neon Genesis Evangelion — admittedly weak, letting a girl do the dirty work, poor father-son relationship, etc. Yuno is crazy. She's a knife-wielding lunatic that's obsessed with gaining Yuki's love. Now that's a dangerous combination. I'm glad she's there though otherwise Yuki would be dead by now and the betrayal of his father would come much harder.

Ai is, sadly, a background character. She has a few knife throwing scenes, but is quickly outshined by her love, Marco. He practically has every good scene and line in this volume (other than a couple focused around the betrayal and Yuki deciding to trust Yuno more). I probably wouldn't mind so much if he didn't look like a wanna-be street punk with the pompadour and seriously crazy eyes. He's on the cover too! Scary.

Overall, the art is well done (though I don't care for the way the eyes are drawn — often big, blank and scary). The story will probably be of more interest to people who are attached 24-7 to their cell phones, but it has intriguing possibilities. I might read another volume if I happened upon it, but I wont go seeking it out. I think it would make a better B horror movie than a manga series, but maybe that's because I've missed something vital in the previous six volumes. Check it out for yourself if you like slasher / thriller horror.
