ISBN: Grade: 7 I am growing more and more fond of Slayers. It's a series with an incredibly good sense of humor about itself. Its ambitions are modest: the work wants to entertain you and make you laugh. It does so in spades. The cover says it's suitable for all ages. The graphic novel of Slayers had a couple of risque moments, but those few jokes would probably go over a kid's head. The issues of the Slayers Special, though, are all ages, in a good way. You can read the comics and your kids can. The humor is broad, in the same way the silliest moments of The Return of Lum are. Slayers is a very silly comic, but it's so funny and likeable, one doesn't care. Yes, there's more substantial fare out there, but this comic is a delicious delicacy with an addictive flavor of its own.
In this issue, sorceresses Lina and Naga finish their duties as bodyguards to an apprentice swordsman named Frad. He turns out to be a real disappointment to the cause of knight errant-hood. The second story concerns the girls' desire to try out red marimo cuisine, which is a legendary delicacy somewhere in the Slayer's world. Unfortunately, someone stole all the red marimo. Our gluttonous gladiators go after the thief, who turns out to be a little more powerful than they expected.
I was glad that I had the next issue, as I had to know what happened next.
