ISBN: 1-56219-945-5 Grade: 8 You could call this "Lodoss: The Next Generation." The emphasis isn't on the crew from The Grey Witch trilogy. Don't despair, though. Parn and Deed make nice, long cameos at the start of the book. And, by the time they leave, you've grown to like Spark, the apprentice knight, and his raggle-taggle of mercenaries almost as much as the original heroes. See, Lodoss is an epic where time does pass, so it's only logical that the torch be passed on to the next generation.
Since Lodoss is an old-fashioned sword and sorcery fantasy book manga, Spark's crew includes a half-breed elf, a dwarf cleric, a mage, and a female thief out for revenge against the evil that strikes out at Lodoss. The crew's mission is to capture some thieves who stole a crystal ball that has powerful magic in it. It's a dangerous and difficult mission, as the thieves aren't human, but evil, magic beings.
I swear, you could easily get addicted to the Lodoss War books. Yes, they all follow the same formula of "D&D characters on a quest," but the writing is so sharp, the characters are so likeable, and the art (this time by Masato Natsumoto) is so evocative, the books quickly grow on a person. I'm very, very eager to find out what happens next.
