I was so impressed with the various Lodoss War books and comics I received from CPM Manga that I was sorry not to have a copy of the second volume of Chronicles of the Heroic Knight. Then, my husband, who read the entire package before I had a chance to look at it, pulled out the second book of this part of the Lodoss story. My heart leaped with gladness. While I still contend that I don't like fantasy comics, Lodoss War comics are an exception. These comics have meat on their bones and precious little fat. Every panel counts, whether in terms of action, exposition, plot twists, or character interaction.

Record of Lodoss War is a comic that one can fairly call "all-ages". A child of either gender would thrill to the adventures of the heroic knight and his companions. I'd definitely get a child into roleplaying videos a copy (in fact, I think Dreamcast has Lodoss War as a tie-in game). But, all-ages books don't always have to be for kids. Good all-ages books have at least as much appeal for adults. Lodoss War is that sort of book. Adults who like good story telling will be at least as happy with the Lodoss books as kids.

In this volume of the Chronicles, Spark, the apprentice knight, and his motley crew of fantasy types, are tracking down the dark elves that stole the Crystal Ball of Souls, which contains powerful magic. As they do so, they are followed by a young woman in a cloak. Is she friend or foe?

This series neatly combines high adventure with some very good character interaction.

The art is a-one. It's manga art for those who don't like manga. It's simply but beautifully done work.
