Credits Writer: Mark Waid Penciler: Butch Guice Inker: Michael Perkins Colorist: Laura DePuy Letterer: Dave Lanphear Grade: 8 SpoooOOooooOOOOooooky! Emma and Simon begin their quest to find the mysterious Mr. Lightbourne. They take a train half way across the continent, to contact some gypsies, and find things not quite as they expected when they get there.
This issue continues the success of the Ruse series and as we near issue ten, it's clear that the quality in this comic is not going to subside. The writing is fantastic. Waid has a way of writing for an educated reader that I find charming. The dialogue between Emma and Simon so clearly portrays their relationship. And the art, inking and coloring keep up with the demand. The facial expressions, body language, and visual comedic timing, keep things moving from page to page. When it needs to be serious, it can, and when it needs to make you laugh, it does.
I'm still genuinely surprised that I so thoroughly enjoy a relatively mainstream color comic. It's rare that a color comic is addressing a demographic that includes me and my interests. Heaven forbid they have an entire issue in which the women are completely clothed. Most of them have little interest in the over-30 set at all. Ruse is an exception, and a very good one.
