In this "What If?" story, Peter Parker learns a startling truth: the man who shot his Uncle Ben was not a burglar, but a debt collector. It turns out Ben Parker was a chronic gambler and his "kind, good uncle" persona was just a façade made up by Peter's Aunt May. Thus, disillusioned from this revelation and encouraged by Gwen Stacy, Peter decides to live his life solely for himself.

... I don't get it.

Oh, I get what Peter Bagge was trying to do here. I like alternate universes and had no problem with a universe where Uncle Ben was less-than-noble. I understand this was supposed to be a humorous story. And hey! I laughed. Gwen suspecting Peter and Spider-Man were lovers and Dr. Octopus' horror at Spider-Man's retirement ("Y-You'll still be back tomorrow, won't you? W-What about us?") was very funny.

The art was also great. I like Bagge's cartoony style. The way he exaggerates everything is hilarious.

However, I think I'm missing something in the big picture. Maybe it's because I don't really know Steve Ditko's philosophies. (Other than the "no interview" thing.)

I don't know. I bet there are plenty of people out there who will enjoy this comic, but it just isn't for me.
