Credits ISBN: 9780761387770 Creators: Julien Neel Grade: 8 Lou and her mother spend the summer in a countryside town with crotchety Memaw, apart from their guys. When each of them meet someone else, will absence make the heart grow fonder, or forgetful?
As I noted in my review of the previous volume, this isn't a series that strives to tell a moral (there's moral fiber there, but we're not spoon-fed it) so much as humourously explore the lives of ordinary people who are very human, and therefore make mistakes. What's interesting is that Lou often proves more mature than her mother. I like that there's similarity between their two situations, and yet they each walk away with different experiences. Then there's the story of their interactions with Memaw; I like how those interactions reflect the interactions between Lou and her mother, as well. There's as much here for adults to enjoy as there is for the intended young teen audience, but conversely, some parents may object to some of the subject matter — most notably, how the mother goes on a date with a guy who isn't her boyfriend (and for questionable reasons), and that the mother's boyfriend sleeps over (yes, as in for sex). Actually, the latter is my fave part of the book, in how awkwardly they act around Lou after, and her reaction to the situation. And the situation with Lou's mom and the other guy is humorous, and she clearly regrets the whole thing later.
Just as with the first volume, I'm in the middle about the art style, but love the colours. As usual, the hardcover and e-book prices ($27.93 and $20.95, respectively) are cost-inhibitive for a 48-page volume (even if the hardcover is of excellent quality), but $9.99 is a moderately more reasonable price.
