This three-episode OVA is a wonderful addition to the .hack world. Hermit fits it so well with his strange powers and connection to Lost Ones (people who are killed in a certain way in the game and go into a coma in the real world). The truth behind him is revealed to others and to Hermit himself causing things to escalate dangerously. Thankfully, Sakuya is a truly kind person; her compassion allows her to reach Hermit when no one else can. Making him a cat instead of one of the human player designs is a great idea. The cuteness is played up, but it also makes him more unusual and intriguing.
It's rather sad that it takes tragedy to make things really interesting in this series. However, they do a really, really good job at it. It also makes the story more real — in a somewhat-scary, somewhat-neat futuristic way. I mean, microchipping people is more than a little scary, but, at the same time, I can see the benefits and that technology can easily go that way.
I love The World. I'm sure many other .hack fans do to. I would enjoy it if this was a real gaming experience I could have. The giant spiders and the corpse-tree in this particular .hack story are darker aspects that I really like. The tree especially adds to the creepiness of the situation and the terrifying reality holds.
I love the Japanese voice acting on this one so much! The voice for Tobias is especially smooth — that alone is swoon-worthy. All of the voices match the characters; it's an excellent sub. The animation quality is great too. The CG elements blend seamlessly with the regular animation. .hack fans should not miss this release. If you're unfamiliar with the series, you can still enjoy this without needing to watch or read other .hack stories, but it may make you want to!
