The one thing that bugs me about this series is how it's riddled with strong, powerful female characters, but they always seem to need rescuing by the guys — even if they're stronger than the guys. Thankfully, the girls are quick to redeem themselves; showing that they also have the deep-seated emotional strength the guys sometimes lack. I love seeing Erza battle Phantom's leader and hold her own (despite being handicapped by a serious injury). Even though her own master took her place, his attack is so awesome it's well worth it! His attack is one of my two favorite scenes in this third part of Fairy Tail. The other is when Lucy shows her true (and still mainly untapped) power when facing the king of the spirits. I take back most of the not-so-nice things I said about her before. I truly expect her and Natsu to become two of the strongest characters in the whole series! I really want to spoil the Celestial surprise, but I won't — just know that it's exceptionally well done and pretty dark!
Learning more about Erza is nice. The touch of Fairy Tail Guild in her past is just the perfect touch. However, even as a child our strong female becomes the damsel in distress. Yes, she overcomes it, finding power and strength in more than one way, but it's a plot device that has a real meaning to the story. Her current-day self is still very vulnerable, using her armor like a shield a mask to protect and hide herself with. Once again we're left at a cliff hanger. This one seems a bit more obvious though. The main bad guy is egotistical, and he's assuming characters are out of the "game" that probably aren't.
The death metal rocker wizard is more than a little weird ... and his power is turning someone into his mind-controlled groupie? At least he adds variety, but he seems so out of place. The cat girl is silly in a good way. She's certainly extreme, but the fight with Natsu wearing a cat head costume is hilarious. Juvia is making herself a nice asset to the team, though she is socially awkward and naïve. Her jealousy surrounding Gray is funny, especially since no one else cares. Lots of humor and plenty of action keep this series exciting. The characters and story continue to grow, and they both show darker sides this time. I can't wait for part 4.
