Credits ISBN: 978-1-935179-20-7 Creators: Geoffrey Hayes Grade: 9 Benny and Penny are brother and sister mice. In this book, Penny is trying to read before bed, and Benny keeps messing around and inserting random dinosaurs into her princess story. They rescue his pirate hat from their play house, and let their imagination run wild right before bedtime. Then, Penny melds their stories into one, so Benny can go to sleep.
What a cute book! Benny and Penny get along just like real siblings. I love that Penny is the more mature one even though she's younger. She tolerates Benny burping and interrupting her and telling her she "can't read." Then, when he has to rescue his hat, he admits being a bit scared and she offers to go with him. It's wonderfully done. I get a real sense of their personalities and relationship from this one little book.
The art is great. I absolutely love that Geoffrey Hayes did all the artwork in colored pencil. It gives the whole thing a very natural and kid-friendly appearance while still being vibrant and well done. The expressions, actions and backgrounds are great. The book is a hardback with thicker pages, so it will stand up well to being handled by children. There's even a guide in the very back to help parents get their kids engaged in reading, which has some wonderful points. This book is recommended for grades 1-2 and I agree. If you're looking for a fun book for younger readers that looks great and can handle lots of wear, the $12.95 price tag is well worth it.
