Takiko refuses Uruki's offer of marital relations. Hatsui learns her secret affliction. They all look for a way into the secret labyrinth to find Teg. Civil war breaks out. And Takiko learns the truth about the prophecy and history surrounding the rulers and Uruki.

I've never really gotten into Fushigi Yugi, but this volume is quite enjoyable. There's no mushy stuff and no fluff. The sexual tension at the beginning is partially based on feelings and partially on Takiko's duty needing to result in her sacrificing her life. I like the combination of plot-necessity and true feelings of love. Things escalate rapidly in this volume, and the end is quite a shocker! Fans of this series will love this volume! There's so much important stuff happening, but it's not overwhelming. It's also an easy-to-follow group of characters, which is impressive since there are so many of them! The art is very nice and helps to tell the characters apart, and the characters are very well developed. While I'm not grabbed by the story or characters enough to want to follow this series, I definitely enjoyed this read and would recommend that others at least give it a try.
