This is the last issue in this part of the story arc; it takes us through the grim demise we're all familiar with. Of course, even that has a Western flair. I have the B cover, which has characters that don't appear in this issue, but is quite beautiful. The way it's framed with the Wicked Witch over the travelling heroes is a nice touch.
I've been reading this series, and I have to say it's fantastic. The Western twist is a great idea and well executed. Dorothy's got spunk, grit and heart. In this issue she wakes up a prisoner of the Wicked Witch. Glenda clues her in (after three long years) on how to get home (or anywhere she desires). Instead of ruby slippers she has ruby spurs, bullets and ruby-handled guns. The rule of three and wishing still apply from the original story, but she has to shoot some of the bullets, which makes me wonder why she hasn’t run out in three years.
I both love and hate that the Wicked Witch uses the Horse of a Different Color as her steed. I love it because the artist and colorist for this comic have done a fantastic job with the horse. It's beautiful, awe-inspiring and a little scary. In this issue especially it has a larger role and some fantastic charging scenes. I hate it because the horse is being used for evil, which is a very different role that it has in the original story. After the awesome scenes with the horse, most of this issue is comprised of a pretty fierce battle between Dorothy and the Wicked Witch. The Wicked Witch is as badass as she is ugly. The art team gets an A+ for choreography and body mechanics; the fight is fairly realistic while still being visually exciting. The Wicked Witch's dialogue is also visually different with green letters in a black word bubble. It's fitting and creepy.
This series gives a classic story a refreshing twist that's fun and exciting. Westerns are tricky to get right and still entertaining, and this series delivers. This issue is the perfect conclusion, complete with climactic battle and Dorothy gaining more knowledge and power about her weapons and OZ. The end of this issue sets up for the next story arc, which is due out this month. I definitely recommend checking it out. In fact, I've enjoyed it so much I'll probably check out other titles from Big Dog Ink.
