ISBN: 9781421533339 Grade: 8 The game against Sannoh continues in a series of duel-like encounters for Mitsui, Rukawa, and Hanamichi. Will they all defeat their opponents?
I like this set-up, concentrating largely one character at a time — although there is also a fun, weird team-up move involving Ryota and Hanamichi. I'm pleased to see Mitsui get some focus. Hanamichi's arrogance is getting pretty terrible again — as is Rukawa's — but then, considering what Hanamichi ends up figuring out about a problem in the game and doing in response, he does arguably live up to his own self-applied hype at one point. I feel sorry for sweet, oafish fellow he's pitted against.
The art is slipping a little, mostly in regard to proportions in full-body shots, the bodies often being too wide or thick. There is, however, a really nice, grey-shaded chapter that I suspect may have originally been in colour.
I have to admit I don't fully understand what's happening game-wise in some parts, but there's enough happening character-wise that there's plenty of story to enjoy even without comprehending those details. You don't have to know precisely what a character is having trouble with to understand that they're frustrated, or to enjoy the reactions of the other characters — especially when those reactions involve shock and compliments!
