Credits Writer: Dara Naraghi Penciler: Brent Bowman Grade: 8 Minoo Shirazi is a young Iranian woman occupying two different time periods. One time period is ancient Persia, and the other is modern day Iran. In the past, Minoo is an adventurous woman who reclaims a stolen holy book. In the present, she is an architectual student fighting against a repressive regime.
I liked this first issue a lot. Minoo is lovely, strong, capable woman up against authority. She is a not a woman without some flaws, but you understand her resistance against the lecturing men in her life, from the priest in the past and her father in the present.
I thought the artwork was beautiful. Even though the comic is in black and white, the story on the past had a very lush, textured apperance that was pleasing to the eye. The art in the modern setting is more spare, and less elaborate, which suits the time period perfectly. The styles were perfectly appropriate to the settings and added to my enjoyment.
The words were more of a mixed bag. I found the dialogue in the past time period to be much to rote and cliché, which I found disappointing. The banter between Minoo and her male partner was somewhat bland. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it detracted from a good story.
The dialogue in the present I found to be much fresher, livelier, and much more real. That made the story more interesting and relevant to me.
Overall, I loved the characters and the story, both past and present.
