Credits Grade: 6 The minions of Il Palazzo and Kabapu are after a gate or door. The City Environmental Security Administration has infiltrated ACROSS's base, but key players are injured and the rest get trapped. The two masterminds work together to continue to be at odds ....I'm a big fan of the anime, but I've only read volume one of the manga before. It's hard to tell if this volume is its own little mini-story or if this really is the plot. The read is funny and full of lots of little details and asides, but it's very dry compared to the anime. The zaniness does not come across in these black and white pages. It's also hard to keep the characters straight, especially when there are three different-looking ones that are apparently the same person or takes on that person. The art is well done, very expressive, and energetic. However, it also seems like the manga-ka is trying too hard at times. Nothing about this particular volume is especially grabbing or memorable, but this series is hard to appreciate from such a small tidbit. One of my favorite parts about this series is catching all the little things thrown in there. The manga has an "Oubliette" section in the back (love the name for that section -- very fitting). The first part is a glossary of sound effects, which is overwhelming but insightful. The second part is information on some of the hidden gems and some translation notes with page and panel numbers. I did not catch all of these the first read through, and am especially glad the Pacman display was pointed out. I'm very grateful for the page and panel numbers, but there are probably less than ten visible page numbers in the book, so it's difficult to use. Written: March 23, 2013
