Translator: Grade: 6 The back half of A Certain Scientific Railgun does not start off auspiciously. Our four main characters -- ESPers Misaka, Shirai, Uiharu, and Saiken -- get involved in something of an informal bikini competition.
Things get a bit more serious as the girls deal with two threats: an all male, anti-ESPer group called Skill Out and a spate of comatose ESPers.
I found the send half of A Certain Scientific Railgun to be a bit better than the first half. Shirai's obsession with Misaka is considerably toned down, so she isn't as annoying a character anymore. While the other characters aren't compelling, they are are fine.
The focus on breasts and breast size recurs throughout the episodes, and it seriously detracts from my moderate enjoyment of the series. I also find that the flashes of brutal violence, particularly with the Skill Out plot, to be jarring with the tone of the rest of the series. The uneven tone of the episodes still persists but is more tolerable.
A Certain Scientific Railgun is a middling series; I've seen worse, but I've also seen better.
