Credits Creators: Gilbert Hernandez Grade: 7 Marble Season is very different from much of Gilbert Hernandez's thirty-year oeuvre -- no buxom women, graphic violence, or supernatural occurrences. However, Hernandez's spare, heavily-lined style lends itself well to telling semi-autobiographical stories of childhood. Marble Season is a fairly standard collection of childhood memories, both fun and painful, but its honest and straightforward style keep in from being overly romantic or overly dramatic.
What elevates this FCDB offering above some others is that it includes the afterword to the full volume, written by Corey K. Creekmur. This short essay puts Marble Season in dialogue with Hernandez's other works and does a great job giving context to the story without rehashing too much of it for readers who want to check out the rest. I imagine it's hard to choose excerpts from a story that flow and make sense together to put out as FCDB books, and including the afterword helps avoid the feeling that the volume is cutting out in mid-story. Drawn and Quarterly has done a nice job with the book -- the printing is particularly high quality for something meant to be given out for free.
