Toriko and Zebra help Komatsu retrieve Mello Cola. In the process they have to fight an ancient and formidable creature, pushing all three of them to near-death. Komatsu's deal with Zebra is also revealed, but there is a loophole that buys Komatsu at least more time with Toriko, but possibly an out altogether. The overall plot gets a few things added to it as well.

Zebra definitely mixes things up. He protects Komatsu, who, unknowingly, has tamed Zebra a bit by impressing him with cooking. I don't want Komatsu and Toriko to be split up, but I appreciate the twist that keeps a little angst in the story while revving up all characters involved to try even harder and be even better. I love that Komatsu didn't let himself be pushed around and even kept arguing with / one-upping their deal. I also enjoyed seeing Toriko and Zebra tag-team; they don't let their egos get in the way or compromise their ability to fight and win. One of my favorite parts is Komatsu instinctively understanding the strange cookbook he found, using his expertise to guide him through explaining to Toriko and Zebra how to specially prepare the Salamander Sphinx. I also like that that creature and the ancient one (which is basically one battle with three parts) is enough to keep me riveted to the story.

This volume has a lot of fighting, pushing the warriors past their brink. I'm not sure why the kcal levels are even shown to us if they aren't going to show them during the main battle or explain why they can use so much kcal after they've exhausted their supply. Yes, they point out that Toriko uses autophage and Zebra uses his rage, but that doesn't explain why they keep talking about how many kcal it will take to do something if they're both running on empty.

This volume also sets up the next segment. There's an encounter in this part that keeps Toriko's massive powers in perspective -- something that's needed with all the super animals and talk of insanely high kcal counts (and usages). It's a fun series with good action and interesting creatures, and I am really liking the twists to the plot.
