Not only is the dynasty falling because the Emperor has a thing for a demoness who totally controls him, the outlying kingdoms are plotting to overthrow the evil empire. The army of the Lord of the West (one of the cooler and more dignified rulers in anime history) has reluctantly decided he must march upon the Yin Dynasty and destroy it. As he tries to get the cooperation of the Lord of the North, the Soul Hunter and his superpowered buddies are trying to keep the Western kingdom safe from some of the bigger magical bad asses in the series.
Things are finally starting to come to a head with the Soul Hunter series, in other words.
While the fight scenes with the magical bad asses were entertaining and exciting, they were just a tad too long. As an adult viewer, I was more interested in seeing the negotiations between the Northern emperor and the Western one. A combination of honor and mistrust makes the Northern ruler unsure about the North’s intentions. Doing the honorable thing isn’t easy when it means that lives may be at stake.
I like Soul Hunter because it’s a nice combination of adventures kids will like and plots adults will enjoy. It’s the type of film you can sit down with your kids to see. Or, if you’re ten years old or over, you can enjoy both for the humor and the drama.
ADV Films thoughtfully provides the DVD with extras, including Voice Actor Profiles (I’m a sucker for these), Character descriptions (very helpful if you haven’t watched previous episodes), a Relationship Tree (a very handy item - there are a lot of characters to keep track of here), a thorough Glossary of Terms, and some spiffy Translator Notes.
