In this volume, they journey to the fortress where the Master of Shadows guards the Source. The kids and Rebecca's grandfather divide in their quest to conquer the Master of Shadows once and for all. We also learn the truth about who the Master of Shadows is. And all of them face personal challenges.
The opening, while they travel, is a lot of talking. This passes the time and stimulates Rebecca's father to fill them in on what's really going on. The truth doesn't really shock anybody and it explains a lot. It also puts Rebecca in an unusual situation when they face the Master of Shadows. I'm a little disappointed that she freezes, but I'm happy with how it turned out and curious to see what happens in the next volume regarding this turn. I like that the divide-and-conquer aspect allows us to have different types of encounters and action. The part with the large bat-like creatures is my favorite, especially when Theo is licked and followed by one. I was glad to see Ilvanna helping, and what happens to her is fitting, but I'm annoyed that I feel sorry for Max; I don't really care for his obsession (though, I suppose, it's important to have one character that feels and thinks like he does). The plot does a good job of balancing the simultaneous storylines.
Maybe it's because I missed the last two volumes and there's a large gap in my timeline of reading this series, but it just doesn't grab me like the first three volumes. It's still great quality with excellent art. Designs, flow, action, plot -- they're all good. I was just left wanting more. My recommendation is to make sure you have all of the volumes and read them in order without too much of a lag in time between them. They are definitely worth reading.
