Credits Creators: Jim Vargas Grade: 5 Alish Karr is half angel, half human, with two prosthetic limbs. Her powers are surging and politics between angels, demons, humans, and other species are breaking down rapidly. She's a mercenary, but she doesn't seem to be able to execute her orders in the specified manner.
Most of the story is told as first-person narrative. This makes it seem more like I'm just reading an illustrated story, rather than a comic. That feeling is enhanced by the fact that the art often doesn't have a sense of real motion or energy -- some panels do, but most don't. Overall, the art has good designs, good coloring, and decent body mechanics. Sometimes, the body mechanics get awkward, which can either make it hard to tell what's supposed to be happening or wonder why they decided to move that way. I'm still not sure why the all-powerful demon throws a suplex (wresting move). When we're shown the city itself, the art really shines. Layout and perspective with regard to buildings is very nice.
Alish is interesting, especially because of her powers. I appreciate that we get a hint of backstory, but there's not enough here to really grasp her as a character. My most burning question has to do with her prosthetic limbs, but even in the flashback / dream she has some form of prosthetic, so no answers there. I'm curious about the padre, but partially because the padre (in a church, mind you) is a demon.
If you like to fund works through Kickstarter, and you like stories of angels and demons that are not typical, you might want to take a look at this issue and / or the Kickstarter for Issue #2. It has potential, but the art seem amateurish. And you can only read narrative for so long before you realize you're not really getting to know the character or seeing the characters interact with one another. I'm giving it an "average" grade because it was somewhat interesting, definitely has potential, but is overall lacking in anything good enough to make me want to recommend or read more.
